We are often asked why Spoilerlights burn out and begin to malfunction.  There are numerous reasons, but the primary reasons are listed below.

There are three primary reasons why Spoilerlights fail:

  1. Spoilerlights have a lifespan of approximately 10 years or 10,000 light hours.  The majority of our customers contact us for spoiler light replacements when their vehicles are approximately 10 years old or older.  This is generally the lifespan of most spoilerlights.  Some burn out earlier which we will explain in further detail below.  If your is 10 years old or older, you are most likely due for a new spoiler light replacement.
  2. Spoilerlights will often burn out or malfunction due to people slamming their trunks and/or excessive road vibration.  We live in a busy hectic world where we are often pressed for time.  We have examined many malfunctioning Spoilerlights over the years and have determined the reason for early failure of most lights is due to people slamming the trunks of their cars.  Most people do not realize they are doing it.  Spoilerlights are generally very tough and will withstand quite a bit of use and abuse.  However over time, small cracks often invisible to the eye begin to form on the lens of the light.  These cracks begin to compromise the seal of the spoiler light allowing microscopic amounts of condensation to seep into the lens of the light.  Once water (condensation) is inside of the light, it begins to damage the internal LED strip and LED circuitry.  Often one or more LEDs will begin to burn out as a result.  Over time, as the LED strip is exposed to the elements, further LEDs burn out until the entire strip begins to fail.
  3. Spoilerlights primary cause of failure is due to water damage.  As mentioned previously, the primary cause for Spoilerlight failure is water damage.  Over time the Spoilerlight lens through wear, oxidation, slamming of the trunk, road vibration, etc. begins to allow condensation (water) into the internal lens of the light.  Once this happens it is only a matter of time before the light begins to fail.  Usually one or more LEDs burn out one at a time. 

How to extend the life of your Spoilerlight?
To extend the life of your Spoilerlight as much as possible do the following:

  1. Park your vehicle in a garage (if possible) and limit exposure to the elements such as the sun, rain, snow, etc.  Extreme temperature fluctuations over time can cause cracking and oxidation of the lens.
  2.  Do not slam your trunk.  Try and be conscious of closing your trunk.  Most trunks will close without the need of much force to the locking mechanism. 
  3. Take care of your vehicle.  Sometimes its that simple.  The better care you take of something, the longer it will last.

Spoiler Lights are made of thin, hollow, plastic molds filled with LED’s (Light Emitting Diodes) sealed and encapsulated in an epoxy substrate, which act as the units light source.

To view by automake, click on your automotive manufacturer in the left hand colum of our website (Example: BMW). Once the page loads, locate your model and the appropriate year it was manufactured. The spoiler lights listed by the manufacturer will be listed below the year/make and model.

Please Note: Since many vehicles are equipped with after market spoilers and spoiler lights we cannot guarantee that the lights we recommend on our site will fit your vehicle.  In most cases there are multiple spoilers and spoiler lights designed for any one vehicle. In all cases we recommend you measure your spoiler light with a tape measure and also observe how the light is mounted (with screw tabs or without).

Recommendations: We recommend you follow our instructions on our site and if possible, email a photo of your spoiler light to us.  We should be able to identify your light by sight and tell you which light is your replacement.

Ok, this is what you need to do. Simply follow the instructions below. (Tape measure, pencil, paper, and screw driver required).

4 Simple Steps

1. How long is my spoiler light?
Take a tape measure and measure the length of your spoiler light in inches. Usually spoiler lights are exact in inches or in incraments of .5 (example: 15.5 inches long).

2. How is my spoiler light mounted?
All spoiler lights are mounted either by screw tabs (using screws to hold the light into place) or with no screw tabs (using adhesive tape to hold the light in place). Some replacement bulbs require a bracket (that comes along with the replacement bulb) to mount the spoiler light in place. As you search for your replacement bulb on our website (in most cases) you’ll notice that you will be asked to choose whether or not you want your replacement bulb with screw tabs or without.

3. What is the shape of my spoiler light?
Some spoiler lights have straight edges (like a ruler) while others are curvy with rounded edges. Some are thin in width while others are wider. After you find out the length of your spoiler light

We are very sorry to hear your having problems with the light you ordered from us. If it is defective, we will replace it no problem. However, first we need to test it. Please do the following:

Take a 9 volt battery.
Press the red exposed wire end to the plus side of the battery and hold. (+)
Simultaneously press the black exposed wire end to the negative side of the batter and hold (-).

If the light is working properly, it should light up. If it does not light up, it is defective.
